GLOBAL PRESENTATION

Holographic Houndoom from Neo Revelation

After the release of the first Neo series, Neo Genesis, followed by Neo Discovery, the third extension is Neo Revelation and this one was released in the US in 2001.

This series still has those big yellow bordered cards and the editions system remains the same, with the first edition and the unlimited edition (no more Shadowless edition though). The Neo Revelation logo, which looks like a circle with three rays coming out from it, is located in the bottom right corner of the illustration of every card of the series.

The secret cards concept introduced in Team Rocket is still there. A secret card is card which has a bigger number on the left than on the right (for example the Dark Raichu from Team Rocket which is marked as 83/83). It’s the first series to contain “Shining” cards, those cards represent Pokémon with their alternative color, the shiny version. There are two Shining cards in Neo Revelation and their drop rates are really low, which makes them really hard to get and really pricey.

CARDS PRESENTATION

The Neo Revelation series is the Neo extension with the less number of cards featured, with only 66, including 14 holographic cards and two secret cards, the two Shining mentioned before.

DISPLAY BOX & BOOSTERS

For this extension, there are four different illustrations available. They are based on the three legendary dogs from Pokémon Gold/Silver/Crystal : Raikou, Entei and Suicune. They are joined by the Misdreavus artwork. Display boxes from this series features all four illustrations on its sides, with Raikou and Entei on its top with the Neo Revelation logo on it. Boosters packs still contain eleven cards with one rare or holographic card included. If there is one secret card in it, it replaces the rare/holographic card.

There are no decks available in Neo Revelation, the only Neo extension to not have one.

MOST ICONIC CARDS OF THE SERIES

When you ask a collector what is his favourite Neo extension, he will probably say Neo Destiny with its great number of Shinings cards like Charizard or Mewtwo. We could easily forgot Neo Revelation, the only other series to feature Shining cards. This series doesn’t have the same amount of Shining but they are as great as Destiny’s ones. According to us, Shining Gyarados and Shining Magikarp are among the best looking Shining cards ever created !

We will talk about those two later one, we will concentrate on holographic cards for now. Starting with the trio, Raikou, Entei and Suicune mirroring the great games from the second generation and remembering the towers from the Johto region !

When you have one of them, you need to have the three of them !

A wonderful trio to own and it’s not over yet. There are also multiple representations of Ho-oh in simple rare or holographic card. Both are great, especially the holographic one.

Designers gave pretty much everything on them !

THE REDACTION’S CHOICES

We could feature a lot of cards in this part, but the Shining cards are taking too much space to put them all !

Shining Gyarados from Neo Revelation… Where do we start ? The first secret card from this series and one of the most beautiful Pokémon card ever created. If most of holographic cards has a simple background, this one doesn’t. Ken Sugimori, designer of Pokémon games artworks from the game decided to put the Gyarados like he was in the game. A shiny red Gyarados in the middle of the Lake of Rage and terrifying fishermen around him ! An extraordinary card and from our point of view, the best shining card ever  !

If you want a shiny Gyarados, you need to have a shiny Magikarp before. And there is the pair from Neo Revelation reunited : the Shining Magikarp ! Also designed by Ken Sugimori, this shiny gold Magikarp isn’t like his big brother. Sugimori decided to put him along with casual Magikarps, so this unusual color catches your eye even more ! It also contrast with the brutal side of Gyarados, this illustration seems less catchy but more peaceful. Another great Shining card to have !

You thought there couldn’t be a simple holographic card that can match the two Shining cards ? This one might change your mind : the holographic Celebi. This little mythical Pokémon from the second generation is represented in space next to a dark planet that contrasts really well with the green color of Celebi. We can also notice the slight silver color surrounding the Pokémon, it gives him the same halo that gods have ! You can’t see the perfection of this card until you have it in your hands !

HOW TO COLLECT NEO REVELATION

We started with the Base set which is one of the easiest Pokemon series to finish and we follow with the straight opposite, maybe one of the hardest series to get in great conditions.

You will need some patience to finish this one. It’s maybe not as hard as the french edition but it’s not free. Unlimited holographic cards will go for 20-50 euros each for a good condition card. Shining cards will cost between 200 and 400 euros for a good to great condition one ! In first edition, you will find holographic cards for a hundred euros in near mint conditions. First edition Shining Magikarp can be find around 400 dollars in near mint condition, Shining Gyarados around 600 euros in the same conditions. It’s also quite easy to find PSA graded cards from this set but sellers know what they are selling when they are graded 9 or 10…

It’s not the most expensive series available in the states but those cards are not easy to find in good conditions or it will be pricey. There are not many cards in this extension but you will need a while to find them all. They are really great, it’s worth trying !

CONCLUSION

The Neo Revelation series is a wonderful one, with its great holographic and shining cards like Gyarados and Magikarp which are among the best cards ever designed in the whole Pokémon card game ! It will be really hard to collect them all but huge cards come with huge prices !

We tried to gave you enough force to start collecting Neo Revelation and we hope to see you soon for the next review on another Pokémon series !

Have a nice week, dear collectors !
